What is the project

This project uses the new Oculus Go standalone mobile VR system and the Unity game engine to track a user’s orientation. The application presents the user with a minimalist virtual environment in which they are surrounded by numerous balloons. A ‘focus sound’ is then emitted at the location of one of the balloons and the user must identify which balloon is emitting the noise. Selecting the correct balloon will cause it to burst and the focus sound then shifts to another random balloon. The application records the number of errors and time taken for each sound location. This information is displayed to the user within the virtual environment in real-time. The intention is for this system to support individuals with visual impairments to more effectively use sound localisation as a means of orientating themselves within the world.
